Geocache Description:

The first part of this cache will take you to various locations in the town of Girard, where you will get clues to fill in the missing numbers of the coordinates below. Those coordinates will lead you to a small, clear, plastic container, containing coordinates to the final cache…a green ammo box. The cache has been placed with the following items: an external GPS antenna (I don’t know what models it fits, but I can tell you it’s not for a Meridian Color!), an adhesive cell phone/GPS antenna booster, 3 CDs, 4 movies on VHS and 2 on DVD, and a few other items.

The given coordinates ( N 42° 00.490 W 080° 18.840 ) are a gravestone in the Girard Cemetery on Church St. I first heard of this interesting marker while visiting the “Ripley’s…Believe It Or Not” museum in Niagara Falls. They had (have) a display of funny/weird gravestones from all over. I came home and searched until I found it. It’s an ordinary looking stone with a unique inscription. It’s in the back section of the cemetery. The car path goes right by it. The 4th digit in the year of this woman’s death is the “A” in the final coordinates.

Next, you will need to go to ( N 42° 00.457 W 080° 18.873), which are the grave sites of the wife and daughter of famous clown, Dan Rice. Subtract 6 from the age of his daughter when she died (in months old) to get “B”.

From here, you will need to go back to Main St. and go to the two Battles Museums (houses) on Walnut St. The first one you come to is the White house. There is a sign in the front yard, near the sidewalk, with the name of this museum on it. Subtract 9 from the number of letters in the first name of the person for whom this is named to get “C”.

A short distance past the White house is the Yellow house. If you plan on touring these houses, this is where you will park and where the tour starts. While you are here, check out Capt. Jim’s Battles Museum of Rural Life Cache . Subtract 1 from the number of steps (including the top step) leading to the front door to get “D”.

Next, go back down Walnut St. and turn left at the White house. This is Locust St. At the other end of this street is the Universalist Church, which is now the Battles Museum’s Orientation Center. The congregation was active in the Underground Railroad. Subtract 1 from the number of columns/pillars in the front of the church to get “E”.

Now, go back to Main St., to the center of town. You will need to park to get some of the next numbers. On the north side of Main St., to the right of the borough hall, is the Battles Bank and the Willcox Library (which is now a floral shop). Find the year that the library building was built. Subtract 2 from the 4th digit of this year to get “F”.

There is a sign above one of the two green doors of the Battles Bank. The sign has three words on it (one small and two bigger ones). Add 2 to the number of letters in the last/third word to get “G”.

In the center of Main St. is the Civil War Monument, which is the first monument in Pennsylvania and possibly the first in the United States dedicated to the Civil War. There is an eagle on the top of the monument. What is the “general” direction down Main St. that the eagle is facing…east or west? West = 6 East = 7. Replace the correct number with “H”.

In front of the borough hall there are three stone blocks near the curb, one on top of the other two. One side says “Old Home Fountain” and the other side has a year on it. The fourth digit in the year is “I”.

Across Main St., by a small park (Wells Park), is a blue Pennsylvania Historical marker/sign. Add one to the number of letters in the first word on this sign to get “J”.

N 42°AB.CDE W 080° FG.HIJ

These coordinates will take you to the first cache, which is only about 30 feet off a trail, and only 1/8 mile from the trailhead (you can park here). The second (final) cache is just a short walk from the first. This is located in a public park. Thanks!
