Allington Lock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

minstrelcat: Well, we expected there to be some nettles around here in the summer but we weren't expecting how big they would get or how many there would be! Having seen how thick the undergrowth was we decided it would be best to archive the cache - the area isn't really suitable. The cache was hard work to locate and we knew where it was! There was some rubbish on the path but there wasn't any near the cache, so from that point of view, searching for the cache was safe.
It was a shame to find that the two TBs listed as being in the cache had gone and no record of this in the log book. [:(]
We are still hoping to have a cache somewhere around here as it is one of our favourite places in the area - with any luck Allington Lock 2 will appear in due course.

Geocache Description:

A walk along the river Medway from Allington Lock. Most of the route is hard surface but there may be some mud near the cache. There will probably be nettles and/or brambles near the cache in summer. Best place to park to appreciate the riverside walk is at N51 17.762, E0 30.505 – but you may be able to park closer.

NOTE: The cache has gone for the second time! The third incarnation of the cache is some way from the other two so past finders of the cache are welcome to visit the cache and re-log a find.

Allinton Lock

Allington Lock is the first lock on the river (travelling upstream) and marks the river’s tidal limit. You won’t need to pass the lock to find the cache but its worth a small detour (despite the noise from the nearby M20) as the area is pretty and well maintained. There is an information board giving the history of the lock. Towards the cache, there are several old river boats moored up – many with small information boards about them on the bank.

From Allington lock you can take a boat into the centre of Maidstone, or you can do the Medway Valley Walk – a footpath which follows the river all the way to Tonbridge! Also nearby is the Museum of Kent life which is also worth a visit.
