Geocache Description:

A short walk through the woods in Camp Security Trail Park in East York.

Camp Security, the last existing American Revolutionary War prison camp, was built in 1781 in Springettsbury Township in York, Pennsylvania. It was the location of imprisonment for many of General Burgoyne’s men during the Revolutionary War. The site of the camp is known, but not the exact location of the buildings and stockade.

After the war, the land was returned to farming, with open fields and woods where the camp stood. In 1999, developer Tim Pasch proposed the construction of a housing development which would destroy much of the remainder of Camp Security. At that point, the site of the camp will be known to future generations only by tradition.

The fate of Camp Security is still uncertain. To learn more about Camp Security and the efforts to save it, visit the Camp Security Web Site at www.campsecurity.com or members.aol.com/stough1752.

To find the cache, park in the lot at the Camp Security Trail Park. To get to the park from York, take East Market Street to Locust Grove Road, then turn onto Eastern Boulevard to the park. Cross the creek on the foot bridge and take the trail to the right through the woods to the cache site.

The initial theme for the cache is "back to school". The best reason I have for the theme is that when it was hidden, it was back to school time, and I couldn't come up with any Revolutionary War items to make it a real Camp Security theme anyway. So, the initial contents include: a highlighter, a rubber band ball, assorted clips and erasers, a stencil, a calculator and red pencil and some post-it notes. If you can, stay with the theme. If not, well then leave whatever you have !
