Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to all those who have served in this country’s military, active duty, reserve, and guard to protect our way of life.

I just recently returned from a deployment in the Persian Gulf Region with the Kentucky Air National Guard. My stay was relatively short but some in my unit were in three different undisclosed locations for more than four months. Even though we all know that this is sometimes what we must do in our profession, more than half the folks deployed are part- time guardsmen, which means they have their own businesses or are employed by a civilian employer. By law, guardsmen cannot be fired or have their pay reduced while on active duty, but this does not prevent employers from placing them in less than desirable jobs.

(UPDATE) I have revisited the camp again and happy to say that soon the camp will be moved into hardened shelters.

The name of this cache is the name of the tent city I stayed at in Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. The namesake of this camp was killed while carving out the base from the coral rock desert of Qatar in preparation of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

I ask a few things of you as you do this cache. The area around you is just your typical wooded area but imagine if you will that the temperature in 120 degrees and for as far as you can see in every direction there is not one living thing, there is nothing but the white talcum powder sand of the desert and pretty soon you will appreciate the woodlands that you are in, then after you do the cache go home and hug your loved ones and thank God that you live in the country that you do. Do not take for granted all that so many have sacrificed to preserve.

This cache is located in Jefferson Memorial Forest, one of the nicest forests in Jefferson County. This is very near the TOM WALLACE CACHE. At the sign where you turn right to go to TOM WALLACE, turn LEFT to go to the Paul Yost Recreational Area where the CACHE-ius CLAY CACHE is located. Area closes at dusk. If you take the yellow square trail at the Mitch McConnell Loop trail head, you will only have to bushwhack about 50 feet off the trail. The cache is a 3"x16" PVC pipe. The original contents are things I picked up while overseas.
