Geocache Description:

A Traditional Cache located near the Five Fingers at the Five Finger Strand or Back Strand on the Inishowen Peninsula in Co Donegal, Ireland.

PLEASE NOTE: Please check the tide before attempting this cache. It can take more than two hours to complete this cache and return to the car park. This cache will be very difficult to complete on an incoming tide.

NOTE ALSO: There is a reasonably steep climb up to the cache. It is about equivalent to a Grade 1 scramble. No climbing equipment is required but care should be taken.

This cache is the first cache placed by the Meri-Beri team, and belongs to Ben.

The location for the cache is a short detour off the Inishowen 100 scenic route, between Malin and Malin Head.

Parking is located at N 55 19.448 W 007 19.928. Which is reached via a small road off the R242 which takes you past the Star of the Sea Chapel at Lag terminating at a small parking area by the sea.

From the parking area head north along the beach and follow the shore-line until you approach the five-fingers. This will be a distance of approx. 1.25 miles over a mainly pebble beach and some rocks. (Sorry, this cache is not push-chair or wheelchair friendly).

The cache is located a short distance up the Knockamany Bens. With care it is relatively easy to climb to the cache without the need for any climbing equipment or ropes.

The original cache container (an old metal ammo box) had started to rust through, and has now been replaced by a new black plastic Otter Box which should stand up to the elements better.

The beach is NOT safe for swimming. There are strong currents. Culdaff beach (about 10 miles away) is a good beach for swimming.

When climing up to the cache, the easiest approach is via the wild goat tracks. Take care on the rocky sections as many of the rocks are loose and could give way resulting in a loss of grip-hold and the possibility of the rock tumbling down to hit someone below.

It may take 2 hours or more to complete this cache from leaving the parking place to returning there. Ben (10) and Megan (7) were able to make it to the cache location to place the cache with a moderate amount of assistance along the way. It will be significantly more difficult to complete this cache if there is a full tide.

Thanks to Detdrum for the suggestion about using the free 'EasyTide' service from the UKHO to check the tide times for Trawbreaga Bay: (visit link)
