About Bald Mountain:

The hike up the mountain is fairly easy, and the views of the surrounding mountains and ponds are breathtaking! We hike up several times a year and sometimes stay overnight. There are places to rock climb, and lots of blueberry bushes for everyone to enjoy! Families can make this hike (our 3 year old daughter was able to hike up by herself, although she needed some assistance going down). Shagg Pond, which is at the foot of Bald Mountain is also a great recreational area. This is our first cache but we wanted it to be a place that we enjoyed. The cache was marked with a Garmin GPSIII. If your GPS coordinates are different at the cache location, please let us know.

Length and Time Required:

Total distance from parking area to the top is approx 1.5 miles. Depending on the number of rests you make, it can take 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to hike up. (The quickest it took one of us was 30 minutes up and 10 minutes down, but we don’t recommend that!). For those who are more adventurous, the trail continues past Bald Mountain over to Speckled Mountain. Trip over to Speckled will take a few hours and is more strenuous.

Parking Information:

There is a parking area for 6 cars at the start of the trail (N44 25.558 W070 32.288). A couple of Geocachers have reported that the parking coodinates are not very accurate, but will get you close enough to figure out where to park and start the hike. (Note: The cache coordinates are right on the money!) On weekdays the lot is empty. On weekends, there tends to be a lot of people hiking the mountain. If the parking area is full, extra parking is available down the hill between Fire Lane Roads 1009 and 1008. Don’t park in the fire lanes as there are camps located on those roads, and you may get towed. Trail is across from the parking area.

Trail Information:

About ¼ mile in, you will reach Little Concord Pond (N44 25.968 W070 32.159). This is an enjoyable pond to stop off on the way back from the hike and take a swim. The trail goes to the right after the Bald Mountain sign. Follow the blue blazes/cairns to the top. Distance from Little Concord to the top of Bald Mountain is 1 mile.

Cache Information:

Cache coordinates given above point to an area that is off the right side of the trail. The cache is a 2 qt screw top plastic jar with an assortment of goodies. A camera is provided to take a photo of your team at the top of the mountain. Please leave the camera in the cache for others to enjoy.
