Geocache Description:

Cache (ammo box) located at new campground area near Shellburg Falls. See two old growth cedars near where cache is hidden and enjoy the nearby falls (within 1/2 mile of cache location - if you start at lower gate, you probably will see them before getting to cache...).

Placed by permission (and help) of Santiam State Forest Recreation Coordinator.

North gate is opened for Summer access! (May 20th)

This is an area that we've hiked/biked many times with our dogs (please be aware: if you start at lower gate on Fern Ridge be careful of many cattle guard crossings - not to mention cows and stuff that cows leave behind!).

Trailheads:

1. Lower ALL YEAR hiking/mtn biking access from locked gate (DO NOT BLOCK!) at small parking area on Fern Ridge Road at N44 48.326 W122 37.645
2. Upper (north gate) SUMMER ONLY driving access off Hwy 214 before Silver Falls, turn onto road for Equistrian Parking area, continue on dirt road for 3-4 miles to gate at N44 49.710 W122 36.711 - continue through gate (open only during summer months) and you'll be able to drive to cache site (just be sure to hike down to the falls or you'll kick yourself later)! Road is VERY bumpy - 4x4 recommended - have literally seen small trucks swallowed and spit out by some of the larger potholes! Use lower gate to hike in if your vehicle can't take a beating!

Thanks to Earth Spirit Photography for the excellent photographs of the upper falls (5 quality prints provided as "first 5 finders" rewards - they've all been claimed now.)

Cache is standard ammo box.
