Rockwood Park is a beautiful and popular 163 acre oasis in the
middle of Chesterfield County. It is at the intersection of Hull
Steet Road and Courthouse Road and you can enter from either road,
although the Hull Street enterance is only available westbound. You
can find a map in PDF format
here or a paper version is usually available at the main trail
head. This entire series is in the western half of the park.
We suggest parking at N37 27.074' W77 34.855 near the Nature
Center, which is worth a quick stop on the weekends. We're seen
herons, woodpeckers, lizards, beavers and dragonflies in the park.
We practice cache-in/trash-out and wish you would too!
The total walking distance is about 2 miles if you choose trails
wisely and not more than 3 miles in the worst case. No stage is
more than 40 feet from some a trail (one is on a spur).
We have redone the second cache location, since the original
location is currently closed for repairs. When it is restored, we
will either move stage 2 back there or add a stage and make this a
four stage cache. The new stage 2 isn't quite as cool as the
original stage 2, but what can you do?
You do not need to dig or tear anything up. Please be kind to
the park. The first cache is smaller than a 35mm film can. The
second cache is somewhat larger.
We visited many different times and averaged GPS readings. We
should warn you that leaf cover is very thick and loss of signal
and very poor accuracy is a frequent problem. Particularly in the
early evening, we have found our coordinates to be off by as much
as 40 feet.
The final location isn't quite as secluded as it used to be, due
to the hurricane's effects. We will probably move it sometime
soon.
