The 'Gator Hole Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Waterbaron: I really hate to archive an old cache, but lately I haven't had the time to check on this one and over the years since I hid it, some access points to the area have gotten sleazy.

Sometime before March, I plan to resurrect this one with a different approach point that will give the same rough terrain and concept but a lot less garbage. It will also give previous finders a chance to visit the area again.

Meanwhile, if someone else wants to hide a cache on this piece of property owned by the taxpayers of Hilton Head, I'm looking forward to seeking it.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located in an undeveloped area owned by the Town of Hilton Head Island near the “heel” of the island. You can park at the library and walk through the woods. N32° 13.100, W80° 42.750.

The ‘Gator Hole is meant to give you an idea of what the inland portions of Hilton Head Island were like before development.

There’s a large pond nearby that’s a good fishing hole with large bream and bass. (The "pond" is actually a "borrow pit" where dirt was removed to lower the water table and build up the surrounding area for development. Without the "borrow pit" walking in this area would require waders much of the year.) It also has a resident population of 10 or 15 alligators. (About 10 years ago, a thief tried to run away from the law by swimming across the pond, but the ‘gators got him. True story. Ask anyone who's lived on the island since 1985.)

DO NOT attempt to feed or approach the ‘gators! SC Law prohibits feeding or molesting alligators. Not only that, they may still have fond memories of the thief, especially the bigger ones.

By following the cache page instructions from the library, you can enjoy a pleasant, but tough, walk in the woods. If you let your GPS find a shortcut, you'll have to trespass and then wade through debris and ugliness.

If you spot any ‘gators sunning themselves, please take a picture and post it with your log.
