Mount Saint Helens Monument, Windy Ridge Viewpoint (parking)
This area is rich in geologic history. Observe a new glacier forming in the crater of Mt Saint Helens. Hike over an ancient glacial moraine now covered with pumus from the 1980 eruption. Sand ladders are needed to climb steep, loose pumus. Walk through wild flowers and flora that have taken 23 years to grow. Walk within 3 miles of the volcano or take a side trail right up to the a waterfalls within the crater itself. Also notice the grey dirt-like piles out on the wash area in front of the volcano. These are called hummocks and are actually rock from the top of the volcano when it erupted. There are about 167 of these, don't qoute me on that one.
The Virtual cache is located in the Plains of Abraham, on the Abraham Trail. This is a 2 mile flat area created from pyroclastic flows of the 1980 eruption. Black basalt cairns are used to help guide hikers. These rocks are from a previous eruption about 200 years ago from a different location on the mountain.
To claim this cache, go to the location (you can hike or bike but bikes are not allowed on the trail to loowit falls in the crater or on the windy pass trail) and take a photograph there. What animals did you see in this lava, pumus, ash covered plains? Elk? Whistle pigs?
