The reason for the high numbers on the difficulty is the final
approach is some real bushwacking through some laurel. Depending on
how you approach it can be fairly thick. The cache is well hidden
to keep it from being seen. There is alot of activity in the area
during hunting season. Please hide it as good or better than when
you found it.
From what I hear market Hunters and Trappers built this along time
ago. At one time it had a potbelly stove and windows in it. Hunters
would hike in and stay there as long as it took to trap and hunt
enough food and furs to keep their families going. Think you are
adventerous enough to spend the night? Sounds good enough for a
cache there right? I know for a fact that coyotes and bears live in
the area because they were spotted when we were hunting in the
area. If going there during hunting season be sure to wear some
blaze orange because it is a popular hunting area. There are a
couple of ways to get to the cach. One way is to go from the
bottom. This is by turning off of route 271 onto Mellot Dr. Go back
to American Way and park there. Please stay on American Way if you
turn off of this street you will be on private roads. This causes
some problems with the locals there. And they will call the local
police. Park at the area where there are signs for no motorized
vehicles behond this point and don't block any road entrances.
Begin your hike up the dirt road where it passes two water tanks.
Another way is to start by going to the Laurel Summit on State
Route 271. This way would be from the top. You can turn off of the
highway onto the gas line which is public land and State Game
Lands. There are alot of different ways to get to the cache from
the summit. To get a little closer you can travel the gas line
approximately 3 miles from the highway. There are some water holes
in the road but most times you can go around them. It can get a
little rough but if you take your time you can make it with just
about any vehicle. The cache is going to be pretty well hidden so
it can't be seen from anyone just poking around. The Cache is
actually hidden behind and ontop of the Stone Cabin in rock
crevice. If you come in from across the top of the flats you won't
see the actual cabin, so look around the area. The front of the
cabin is at 40-18.942N 079-01.347W. I put this in because it may
help in the hint. Have fun and don't forget the bug spray.
