Cache in the heart of historical Carbonate Pass mining area at 10,300 ft elevation, a few minutes from the summit of Kessler peak.
Carbonate pass could be approached from 4 directions: from Cardiff Fk. (near Moria Mines cache or by Kessler North Face trail from just below Doughnut Falls cache area), from Mineral Fork, or by Argenta trail from Big Cottonwood Canyon (our new Mineral Clifftops cache). If you take the Argenta trail, keep in mind that a 150-ft segment of this trail is washed out where it bypasses the S end of a cliffband, just below Carbonate Pass. The trail used to make a hairpin turn left in this area. As soon as you reach the remnant of a fallen dead tree trunk, turn sharply left (N-NE) above the cliffs, you'll reconnect with the trail in 50 ft. Take time to study the mines and broken-down mine shacks around, and don't forget to sign summit register at Kessler peak, a few hundred feet N from here.
The cache is a quart+ size round container inside a camo-colored plastic bag. It contained:
- foreign coins
- matryoshka doll pen
- nucleotide light pen
- emergency poncho
