I looked around this cemetery for a good while to find something unique or some one of great importance and at first was not able to find one. Then it came to me that this largely agricultural area was home to all the forgotten people out there who work the land to provide all the stocked grocery shelves we all have become accustom to. We owe a lot to these folks who start work way before most of us, and end the day long after where watching TV in the evening. There are several notable monuments and names that mean something to someone if you’re from the area. I noticed a family name of a teacher whose love for history was presented in such a way that it had an impression on this cache placer.
One of Sonora’s most famous sons is Carl Brashear who started his early life near this town as a sharecropper and later became a Navy Diver. Cuba Gooding Jr. played him in the movie Men of Honor. If you read the historical marker just before you enter town on the corner next to the Ashland gas station you can get more information.
The Sonora Cemetery was established in 1899
