Geocache Description:

Short hike off Highway 50. Just over 1 1/2 mi RT.

Some years back on Memorial Day Weekend, someone (never knew who) used to place a very authentic looking sign for the "Stinking Desert National Monument" at the entrance to the abandoned rest area on Hwy 50, by the "Christmas Tree."
The sign went on to explain that when Fathers Escalante and Dominguez made there famous trek through this area, they came to this place and said "Who would want to live in this stinking desert?" Then, for a few years, local square dancers from Delta and Grand Junction held a "Stinking Desert National Mounument Dance" on the pavement at the rest area, complete with generators for power. It was a great time. I haven't seen the sign for years, but, in honor of this "National Monument", I placed this cache. You can park at the rest area. The cache, an ammo can, contains a whole list of goodies, including doggy treats for the first dog to find. It is well hidden, so good luck.
