Cache is in a Rubber Maid type container and is about .85 mile hike on trail with about a 400 to 500ft elevation change. The trail is open and easy to follow until you reach the field. Then just go stright up through the grassy field until you reach the highest point. Then stay on the top of the ridge line until you reach cache area.
This cache is located on North Carolina public land (game land). The trail is very open and easy to follow, so stay on trail especially during hunting season. The climb up to the top of the Joe Lewis field is quite steep, but once there you'll know it was worth it. You may find the trail head that will take you down into the Lost Cove settlement, if you have all day. This is a Bear sanctuary so no bear hunting allowed, however, lots of deer hunting so be sure to stay on the trail in the open, and also to avoid the other type of crawling critters that slither through the thickets. Parking is at N36 03.275 W82 22.701 on Flat Top Road. Turn off Hwy 19W at White Oak Flats Road. When you get to Harm Miller Gap, go left onto Flat Top Mountain Road.
Original cache contents:
Toby Bear
Steel Whistle
Emergency Blanket
Colman Illuminstick
Wood fire starter log
mini biner
mini pocket knife
roll of bandage gause
pensil and log book
To get there, two ways.. Off I-26.. take exit 5, the flag pond exit. turn left at highway and go until you reach Hwy 352. Go right to find Hwy 19W. Turn onto 19W and this will be a steep crooked mountain road. About 16 miles to White Oak Flats Road, which will be on your left.
Other way is to follow 19E from Mars Hill to Hwy 19W or from Burnsville, NC.. go west about 4 to 5 miles once in Yancey County to find 19W.
Once on top of the Joe Lewis Field..go to the far west end of the field and enter the woods. When you find the large formation of Rocks.. Your very close. In the fall, this is a very beautiful place with all the color. Driving to it may be your biggest challange.
Remember, this is game lands.. and hunters do come by here so be sure and rehide the cache as you find it.
