From Milton take HWY 87 North to CR 191 @ Milton High School. Go 11.7 miles to Red Rock Road next to a church. Go 3.6 miles on Red Roack Rd to the trailhead (N30 47.109/W086 53.201. Trail is nearly level uplands. Approx. 1 mile round trip to cache and back.
From February 1967 until the early 70's, the U.S military operated a highly classified project codenamed: IGLOO WHITE. This project involved dropping sophisticated electronic sensors along the Ho Chi Minh trail in North Vietnam to listen for troop and vehicle movements. The sensors were initially dropped from modified Navy P-2V aircraft and after 1968, the duty was undertaken by USAF F-4D's. Whenever the sensors detected movement, whether acoustic or seismic, attack airplanes would be sent to the location to destroy the target. Some of the later model sensors were apparently able to detect the ignition sparks from the North Vietnamese truck sparkplugs! The Igloo White sensors themselves were 3' long cylinders with a camouflage paint job. They were sometimes equipped with a fake plastic plant attached to the tail for additional concealment. This cache simulates an actual sensor package and is deployed along the Juniper Creek trail. The container is a 2' long camouflaged tube with a black nose cone. Access the contents by UNSCREWING the nose cone. Sign the enclosed log and return the sensor to it's upright position. If you have time while in the area, visit the USAF Armament Museum in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. They have a very nice display with some actual IGLOO WHITE sensors. Although this program has been de-classified and phased out, there are much more sophisticated sensors being used in "hot spots" around the world. This new generation of equipment can detect thermal energy (body heat), body odor, and CO2 from your breath! As the saying goes "You can run, but you'll only die tired!"
