Geocache Description:

Subtitle 1: Another park found through geocaching (APFTG)

Subtitle 2: All about me, the 3 year old

Sure it’s APFTG, but this is also the former site of my Kindergarten, and the location of several of my earliest memories. Laureola School stood just to the east, where there is now a street of newer homes. The thought of blankie time after lunch still brings a smile to my face.

My absolute earliest memory is of the railroad crossing at Holly and Old County. Back then the crossing was at grade level, not elevated like now, and a stop sign and mechanical arm protected it. We lived in the post-WWII neighborhood to the north. One fine autumn day, I (an almost 3 year old) packed a bag of plastic toys and hoofed it down several blocks of sidewalk towards downtown. All that separated this adventurer from the toy store were the railroad tracks and El Camino Real. But alas, at Holly and Old County, a frantic mother caught up to her errant child.

Another mental image was from under a bench table inside the old Recreation Building. A cousin had dropped off and left this 3 year old for a Parks Dept. kid activity. I was terribly shy and hid under a table for a long time, until the activity leader finally coaxed me out. The person asked, ‘Where do you live?’ Yeah, like I had a GPS back then. Forty years have passed, and those tables are still in there. The place is currently used by a non-profit, "Special Needs.’ There is a nice bench to sit on outside the door. It may be too busy at 5 to 6 pm on weekdays.

And now about the park. Laureola Park features a soccer field and softball diamond posted for young children. The basketball hoop looks short to me. There are two side-by-side tot lots. There are picnic tables and charcoal braziers. There is the old Recreation Building; it is wheelchair accessible.

There are three entrances to the park. A small sign is posted at a subtle alleyway off Old County Road. There is a parking lot down this alley. The CalTrain station is one block away.

Only the smallest trade items for this magnetic yellow altoid tin. I’ll just have to look somewhere else for plastic toys.
