Geocache Description:

A trip thru Asheville's varied past in an historic cemetary.

Riverside Cemetary is open Monday thru Friday, 8:30am-8pm. Office hours are from 8:30am-4:30pm where a very helpful archivist can help you look up history and grave sites. The office is in the center of the cemetary in a small brick building with a white door. I suggest you park near there and walk for the first part.

Each gravesite has a clue to finding the final cache. The above coordinates begin and the rest are in order of easiest walk. You will need to answer a question at each spot. Print out this sheet and take it with you.

N 35 3 _ . _ _ _ W 82 3 _ . _ _ _

1) William 'O. Henry' Porter, Writer.
Find the grave next to his and note the death date. Write the decade (10s place) in first blank North.
2) Thomas Wolfe, Novelist.
On the bottom right of his marker is a set of three words in a circle. Take the number of letters in the first and third word and add them together. Put this answer in the third blank of West.
3) Celtic Cross (over 6' tall).
Find the name at the bottom which is family name of this site and put the number of letters in the third blank of North.
4) Lamar Stringfield, Composer.
Composed symphonic works based on American folk-lore. He was awarded the Pulitizer prize for his orchestral suite "From the Southern Mountains."
Complete this inscription : WW1 MUS 1 CL HQ CO ___ ENGRS. Take the middle number and put in the second blank of West.
5) Robert Brank Vance, Brig-Gen, 29th REGT NC INF, CSA. Take the Chapter Number off the metal cross and put the last digit (ones place) in the first blank of West.
6) Tree Stump, Starnes.
On the back is a family list. Look for the Doctor. Take the number of letters in his first name and put in the fourth blank of North.
7) Thomas L. Clingman, Brig-Gen Col 25th NC REGT, CSA.
Look on the side of the marker for a measurement in feet. Take the first digit and put in fourth blank of West.

You may want to drive to the next spot.

8) Birdbath, Fresenius.
Take her death day (ones place) and put in the second blank of North.

Now you are on your way to the cache which is not in the graveyard, but accessible FROM the graveyard in a nearby park. Drive down to the farthest part of the the graveyard and you will find yourself very close to these final coordinates. There are many footpaths so try not to create any new ones. The approach from uphill of the cache is briar free and the cache is hidden by a piece of bark. Container is a white tupperware-like box about 4"x4"x4" so bring something small.

The following coordinates are kinda clues which you may resort to when stumped for locations, but some just put you in the vicinity. They have been coded in a simple ABC code (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc) so as not to spoil it for those who want to spend more time.
