A beautiful mountain lake with access to the Selkirk Ridge and spectacular views.
From downtown Sandpoint, drive north on Hwy 95 approximately 12 miles and turn west onto Pack River Road, following this 19 miles to the Beehive Lakes trailhead. Note that the last five miles is best negotiated with a higher clearance vehicle. From the trailhead, hike a pleasant 3.5 miles to Beehive Lake, a beautiful alpine lake in a granite cirque. The cache is not far from the lake in a talus/boulder field and, because of the south facing aspect of the hide, should be accessible a bit earlier in the summer season than might be expected. There are two cairns directly uphill from the cache that mark the start of a faint trail which ascends the ridge. You simply must take the time to scramble to the top and do some exploring. The view of Little Harrison Lake below on the other side and the summits of Harrison Peak, Twin Peaks, Roman Nose, Bottleneck Peak, the Wigwams and more are simply incredible. There is a gully through which you can scramble down to Little Harrison Lake. For a longer adventure, you can follow the crest to (big) Harrison Lake and return to Pack River Road via the Harrison Lake Trail.
The original cache contents include some nice, useful outdoor stuff, a 2003 USA Geocoin TB and the Karen #2 TB. The latter is a memorial for a fellow geocacher’s spouse which would like to visit mountain lakes.
