The cache is hidden along the "Circuito di S. Carlo", originally known as "Strada Borromea". This "strada", in parts ancient, cobbled mule paths winding up and down steep slopes, connects four small villages clinging high above to the mountain sides on both sides of a deep canyon.
Coming from the Lago Maggiore you drive up the canyon on a nerve-wreckingly narrow and winding road with breath-taking views on the river deep below. You can park your car at N 46° 05.694' , E 008° 35.134' in one of the four hamlets; this is closest to the cache. However, we'd recommend to hike the entire trail (about 5 - 6 hours), it's highly rewarding. The trail is well-blazed, and along the way you'll find signs giving some background (in Italian) on the history of the places, how people made living, etc. Start (and finish) your trip at N 46° 05.117' , E 008° 34.176'. People in this hamlet trace back their ancestry to some Scottish mercenaries who, after having been defeated in some battle in Norther Italy sometimes during the 15th century, took refuge here - after killing the entire male population. Visit the local museum, and don't miss to visit the Scotch Bar (!) in this village. Enjoy the trail!
The cache is a regular plastic box with blue lid. In addition we wrapped it in a yellow plastic bag. Besides a log book plus pencil it contains a ball pen, a key ring, drawing pins / thumbtacks, and a post card. You might find the satellite reception a bit impaired, courtesy of the surrounding mountains. So we wish you good luck, hoping that a sufficient number of satellites will be "visible" when you get there.
