Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in the Quemahoning Dam area. DO NOT attempt this cache during the winter months.

Please park at the following coordinates before proceeding to the cache N 40 10.577', W 078 57.562'.Welcome to the Quemahoning Dam Public Access. The Quemahoning Reservoir is an incredibly scenic 900-acre lake between Hollsopple and Jerome, Pa. The dam was constructed in the early 1900s to supply industrial water to the booming steel industry of the Johnstown area during the early part of the century. It had been privately owned by Manufacturers Water Co. of Johnstown, a subsidiary of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. A joint authority between Cambria and Somerset counties in 1999 purchased the lake and surrounding property. Quemahoning Lake is now being used to provide non-potable water to area industries. The reservoir is now open for public recreation, including fishing and non-motorized boating. Plans are underway to provide walking trails, picnic pavilions, camping sites and a public beach. The cache was placed by a group of loonies out howling at the full moon. Enjoy and respect this treasure provided for by the CSA. The contents of the cache (ammo box) are as follows: a brief history of the dam as seen above (please leave this with the cache), Benscreek Canoe Club and Conemaugh Valley Conservancy membership applications (please join either or both to help support the efforts to improve the recreational opportunities in our region), Mosquito trap, 3 CVC magnets, emergency poncho, CVC water bottle, Womens Timex watch found on the Ghost town trail (If you know the owner please return it).
