This is a very simple two step cache and it will be very easy to
find the final coordinates. The camo painted 1 quart container is
located at:
39° 26.(xxx) 123° 48.(417)
There is an Historic Events plaque on the tree round. To find
the value for (xxx) add the item number for Columbus' discovery of
America to the primary cache northing coordinates. The ITEM number
on the plaque, not the date. Notice also that the longitude also
must be changed.
Your adjusted coordinates should take you to a place shielded
from view by some young relatives of the subject of this cache.
Mendocino County has
provided the lumber needed to build San Francisco and beyond
from the gold rush days until the present. The first mill on
the coast was established in 1852 in the village of Mendocino,
known then as Big River.
JD Johnson purchased a mill at the Ten Mile River in the late
1880’s and moved it to the current Fort Bragg site and formed the
Union Lumber Company. ULCO was sold in the 70’s and eventually
ended up in the hands of Georgia-Pacific. G-P closed the mill
earlier this year after 125 years of continuous operation.
Dedicated in the year 1943 this is believed to be the largest
redwood tree ever cut in Mendocino County. This section of that
tree was saved for the record and lists interesting historic events
with a tag showing the coresponding tree ring. The tree was
approximately 2000 years old.
For several decades it has been tucked away from easy public
view though appropriately located at the west end of Redwood Avenue
in front of the G-P mill offices. G-P donated this item to the City
of Fort Bragg and volunteers moved it to the Guest House grounds
where it will now receive many more visitors.
The magnificent Guest
House and grounds are another donation to the city from G-P.
This our version of a town square and the Guest House is the
local history museum and very worthy of a visit.
