Over The River, And Through The Woods Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RiverExplorer: Well folks, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this one's back "Over the river, and through with - for good". Seems the good folks at the IDNR want all the Turkey Run caches removed. I spoke to a very nice Ranger lady today at the Nature Center, who informed me that everything on the North side of Sugar Creek is a nature preserve, and the new IDNR geocaching policy prohibits caches in these areas, and that they were in the process of removing all caches.

She was nice enough to give me a copy of the policy, and an application for a permit to place one on the South side of Sugar Creek if I wished. She also showed me 3 geocaches that had been picked up by rangers as they rid the park of existing caches, asking if one of them was mine. Unfortunately, mine wasn't among them, so she encouraged me to go remove it for her. I headed out by kayak to comply, only to find it was gone already. I don't yet know if that's because another Ranger has picked it up, but not turned it in yet, or if it's gone missing, but nevertheless, it is gone, and can't be replaced here. She did say that they would attempt to contact the cache owners, and give them 30 days to pick up their containers. I believe the caches she had at the Nature Center were "Dean and Jerry", "Let's Try This Again" and "Pawpaw Cache"

So, it looks like Indiana's premier park is no longer the cache heaven that we enjoyed for a while. Bummer. I'll post pictures of where the cache was, for posterity. A sad day for geocaching!

Sorry,

RiverExplorer

Geocache Description:

Come by canoe, kayak, or hiking boots. Enjoy this wonderful park!

While this area already has several caches, I felt there was room for one more cache to celebrate this fantastic place. This is truly one of my favorite places in the whole world. If you visit here, PLEASE plan to spend a day or more, as this park has so much to offer the explorer.

This cache is a fairly long but beautiful hike, or better yet, a beautiful paddle, and a very short walk for the canoer or kayaker - my prefered method. If you need to rent a boat, I recommend Sugar Valley Canoe Rental, just across the road from the park entrance. Just tell them you want "the short trip", from the Narrows Covered Bridge to Cox Ford Covered Bridge. For around 12 bucks, they'll shuttle you and a boat to the put-in, and pick you up at the take-out, (and you can pick up around 8 other caches along the way if your energetic enough)! It's about a one to two hour float if you don't get out and explore too much, like I do. Exit the river on the appropriate sand bar, and the cache is only a hundred feet or so up a hill.

USE CAUTION AND COMMON SENSE ON THE RIVER. This usually peaceful little stream has a bad temper at high water. If coming by trail, be advised that the park lists the trails leading to this cache as "Rugged", so it might not be ideal for the very little ones, or those not used to moderate hiking. The cache is an ammo box, well stocked with great stuff. Original contents include: Authentic Indian Arrowhead, DVD - The Rocketeer, Book - Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, Pink Yo-Yo, "Flu Bug" Stuffed Toy, Stuffed Snake, Collector's Barbie Doll, a Camera to take your picture at the cache, and 2 Large Pizza Gift Certificates good at Monical's Pizza in Shelbyville, IL - my signature item. Cache is fairly well hidden up a fairly steep hill, but very close to an established trail. ENJOY!
