How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Visit an area said to be haunted by a ghost.

Find this cache and read Helen's story -- a mournful, hundred-year-old tale.

NOTE: This is a themed cache, now restocked with a variety of "ghoulish goodies." Please bring similar items to exchange. You are also invited to add to the cache any ghostly experiences you've had (please write it down beforehand as the cache isn't stocked with any paper other than the logbook).

To get to the site from downtown Asheville, head in an easterly direction on Highway 70 (a.k.a. Tunnel Road). Turn right onto College Street just before you get to Beaucatcher Tunnel. Follow College Street to the 3-way stop on Beaucatcher Mountain (go left at the sharp turn on the way to the 3-way stop). Park in the pull-off directly ahead of you as you sit at the stop sign.

To get to the site from the Asheville Mall side of the tunnel, go in a westerly direction on Highway 70 (a.k.a. Tunnel Road). Turn left onto College Street just after coming out of the tunnel. Follow College Street to the 3-way stop on Beaucatcher Mountain (go left at the sharp turn on the way to the 3-way stop). Park in the pull-off directly ahead of you as you sit at the stop sign.

At this point you are near the cache. In fact, if you use the encrypted hint you won't need a GPS unit at all. Even with a GPSr, you may need the hint because reception here is poor and the coordinates may be off.

POISON IVY ALERT: The cache area has some of the healthiest poison ivy I've ever seen. Please come prepared and be careful what you touch. If you fear you've been exposed, go to one of those chain drug stores and get some Tech-Nu Poison Ivy Cleanser and follow the instructions on the label. It's great stuff.

Also note that a fair amount of traffic goes through this intersection, so please be discrete (this cache has already been muggled once, unfortunately). There is also some litter in the area, so please bring a trash bag (this will give you something to do if and when someone comes along while you're looking for the cache). The area already looks much better than when I first set this cache up, so keep up the good work!
