Geocache Description:

A leisurely stroll on the outskirts of Smithfield, VA.

There are two historic claims to fame that put the sleepy town of Smithfield, VA on the map. The one that everyone remembers, of course, was the creation of the world's largest ham biscuit in 2002. The other claim is as the home of one of the oldest churches in America that still stands. As a child growing up in Smithfield, I was part of several field trips to this church, since admission was free and there wasn't a whole heck of a lot else to take the kids to see in Smithfield. Wars, droughts, hurricanes... nothing has threatened this venerable establishment, even if it DOES tend to get upstaged by the biscuit.

But then, when you've been around as long as this church has, you probably don't sweat the small stuff. Construction started allllll the way back in 1632. It was one of only five places where the Court of the Colony was allowed to convene and conduct the business of the day in those colonial times. Those who maintain it are certain that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other notables of the revolutionary period stopped by here. Ham biscuit, indeed. World records come, and world records go. But this old lady has stood proud since before America was America, since Isle of Wight County was Warrosquyoake County (and a million thanks to whomever decided to change THAT), when collecting food wasn't about getting in a book, but surviving to the next spring.
