Ever wonder who makes those map products you use for geocaching, and how they do it? In this series, you will sample some of the steps yourself.
Lesson 4: Compilation
If you're doing these steps in numbered order, you've already surveyed your map area, taken your remote images, and developed your pictures. Now let's turn those images into a 3-D (topo) map.
In order to create the 3-D effect, you need two overlapping images. There are lots of ways to do this. ViewMasters, StereOpticons (look in antique shops for these), and Stare-e-o-grams (e.g. Magic Eye) use different ways to feed different images into each of your eyes. (Personal note: Making topo maps from stereo images is what Hermione does when she's not geocaching. Her workstation looks like a ViewMaster above, and an Etch-a-Sketch below.)
This is a 3-D cache. Bring a 3-D image item (something like what's listed above) to trade. DON'T TAKE THE VIEWMASTER ITSELF OUT OF THE CACHE! For those of you who simply cannot find something to swap, there are a couple non-theme items in the ammo box, too.
Note on terrain: Yes, it's on an island. No, there isn't a bridge. You will have to cross the creek. There are shallow spots to do so. I placed this in the fall and didn't even get my socks damp. It will be much wetter in the spring; if you go in the spring right after a rain, you may wish to bring waders or a spare pair of shoes and some fresh socks.
