The Lovers' Bridge Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Speedy38: The neighbors are not keen on having people over here. Time to put this one to rest. I ask that no one replaces a geocache here for respect to the neighborhood and property. Hopefully the reviewer sees this and doesn't approve a drive by pill container, I can guarantee the property owner will not like more people walking in this area. Lovers bridge had a good run! Thanks for finding it!

Geocache Description:

Parking is quite tricky in this area , very narrow roads. These coordinates are good for a single car: N 41 39.566/ W070 50.194. Easy walk , but may be a tricky find. There is some tree cover at times , but you should be able to find it with no problems. I got within 20 feet accuracy.

History of the location: The Mattapoisett River flows along, in the inconsequent way of rivers, from Snippituit to the sea. It is beautiful when seen from the highway, but still more beautiful in the dark places where the trees and tangled vines interlace overhead. It was the Indians' course to the seashore. On their return from the shore , they made the first clambakes, naming the spot the "place of rest," and thus giving a name for the river and the town. Where the river begins to widen out is the romantic spot known as "Lovers' Bridge," a rustic log foot-way has long existed across the stream and according to the legend it was the trysting place for an Indian maiden and her lover form the North who came down the river in his canoe to meet her. (above wording and picture taken from the book "Mattapoisett and Old Rochester by leonard and others, 1950) Today , the bridge is not standing but you can still see where it used to be. A great spot to view the Mattapoisett River. The cache: Located on town land and a beautiful walk along the river. Camo metal army container , please seal well and, please hide as found. Take a look at the picture of the original bridge before you go! I hope you enjoyed my brief history and good luck on the find! *** Don't forget*** Trash Out is a primary objective of a worldwide activety known as Geocaching. It means collecting and removing extraneous litter while geocaching. Neat way to fold a plastic shopping bag into a compact form: Lay the bag out on a flat surface. Press it to remove as much air as possible Fold in half so that the handle loops are together Fold it in half lenthwise again pressing it flat to remove the air Repeat lenthwise folding until it is 1-2 inches wide. Starting from the bottom of the bag loop it around two fingers and roll it up Twist the handle loops a couple of times then place them over the bag. The handle loops should now keep the bag from unrolling Press the bundle flat and you should have a thin package about 2 inches square. Cache In Trash Out About six of these can be placed inside of a ziplock bag for fellow Geocachers to take with them to fill up with garbage as they depart the Cache site.
