Located about 13km from Antigonish as the crow flies, James River Falls is a lesser-known but beautiful spot on Brown's Mountain. Depending on the trailhead you choose, the hike will be one to two kilometres in length. Parts of the trail can be quite wet even in the summer months. Be sure to wear some good boots. The rough roads over Brown's Mountain can be travelled by car in the summer and fall but drive carefully. A light truck helps in spring. In the winter, you will need a snowmobile.
There are two trailheads to the cache. The first is located at N45°37.504' W62°09.979'. The hike from the first trailhead is shorter and thus more popular but it usually accumulates more water than the second. The second trailhead is at N45°38.273' W62°08.756' and is easily identified by a natural spring.
Aside from the spectacular scenery, James River Falls holds a special place in my memory as it was the first place I got lost as a boy. In scouts, a few of us were a bit eager and missed the fork in the trail. We ended up at the second trailhead and relied on the generosity of a logger driving through the area to take us around the mountain to the first trailhead. Don't worry about making this mistake today - the good folks that run the local outdoor camp have placed a big yellow arrow and lots of blazing tape at the fork in the road.
The cache itself is a cammoed tobacco jar.
Locking on to satellites can be difficult at the cache site because of the rock in the area. You may want to decrypt the hints before you leave. Please cover the cache well when you are finished, thanks!
