Geocache Description:

This is a 2 part cache with the first part giving coordinates to the actual cache. Both are on level flat ground and relatively easy access.

This cache is located in a huge dish shaped geological structure called Cheyenne Bottoms. Encompassing some 41,000 acres, the Cheyenne Bottoms is one of 12 historic large marshes located in central Kansas of which only 5 remain. Cheyenne Bottoms was designated a “Wetland of International Importance” under a worldwide treaty in 1988. Kansas State Wildlife and Parks have control of about 20,000 acres of this area of which about 12,000 acres are usually covered with shallow water.

It is estimated that 45% of the North American shore bird population stops here during spring migration along with thousands of ducks and geese. The Bottoms are also considered critical habitat for several endangered species including, Whooping Crane, Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, Piping Plover, and Least Tern among others.

At various times 25 species of ducks and geese, 320 species of birds, 44 species of mammals, and 19 species of turtles and reptiles make Cheyenne Bottoms home. (CAUTION) This includes some rattlesnakes.

This cache is located on the north side of Cheyenne Bottoms.
Your first stop will be at a large sign describing the area. You can find the coordinates to the actual cache engraved on a 1" X 3" piece of aluminum attached to the sign. You will have to get low and look up. From here you have 2 choices to the actual cache. The quick route will be to continue east on K-4 highway for about 3 miles to find a gravel road in the right direction. The scenic route would be to continue south from the sign about a mile and then find a road over a cattle guard heading east. In either case you will end up at a oil tank battery directly west of the cache. This is as far as you can travel toward the cache on good gravel and about .4 miles from the cache. Park here for a nice hike or if the road conditions allow, you can follow a oil lease road a bit further to within .2 mi. I would suggest walking from here since you are on public hunting area and vehicles aren't allowed. Continuing - the cache is past the public hunting land and on private land (with permission of the landowner). You will be hunting for a green ammo can with the usual trade items like key chains, minature car models, plastic animals, small flashlight, tape measure, etc.
