Geocache Description:

A tribute to an early conservationist's dream.

In the early part of last century, Harry Ell devoted his life to establishing the Summit Road and the wayhouses along it. There was the Sign of the Takahe, the Kiwi, the Bellbird, and the Packhorse. (The Summit Road Society page has some good history and links)

However, Harry had nothing to do with the Sign of the Polar Bear!

The Sign of the Packhorse is now a trampers' hut, as the Summit Road never made it this far.

The cache is a 1.2l black Otterbox container.
