Fantastic hike along the Nantahala river.
This hike is about three and a half miles long (round trip) and will showcase this beautiful river. Along it you will see a couple waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and interesting history.
This trail is an old roadbed and toward the end you will notice the foundation of an old bridge used to cross the river. Part of the trail will be underwater when Fontana lake is at full pond but you will still be able to reach the cache. Just a little further past the cache you will see Bird falls on the other side of the river. The falls are about 100' tall but tend to be a bit obscured.
The trailhead is in the back of N.O.C. N 35'20.053 W 83'35.403 This is where Wesser creek merges into the Nantahala. The falls here are quite beautiful in of themselves. The cache container is tupperware and is full of goodies.
*NOTE*: The cache is placed towards the river and is not near the tracks.
We have placed this cache in a area we use as a waypoint for further hikes. It is a great place to have lunch, read a book, or contemplate life. Have fun and be safe.
