A 35mm film can located a short distance off Hammondton Smartsville Rd. Pen not included. The road has many pot holes but is safe and drivable if you go slow. Note the branch road that goes right up to the cache is very loose gravel and requires 4wheel drive.
Sabiniana (Pinus sabiniana- Digger Pine) grew tall and strong along the Yuba river. She saw many things. In the fall she watched the Salmon spawn and in the winter the Eagles perched in her branches. One day the miners came and worked the gravel under her roots looking for their dream nugget. Then several years later the warm rains came when the mountains were deep in snow. The rain stayed for days and the river swelled with the rain and snow melt. The ground gave way and she was washed into the river. Down she floated under the bridge and on to a gravel bar where the receding water left her to spend the last of her days.
Once her tall branches held the Eagles but now the prostate branches hide the Blue Belly lizard. The miners are gone now but she listens to sounds of fishermen and rafters as they float by on the ageless river.
Then one cold and foggy day the sound of a new breed was heard. They carried strange electronic devices as they walked around her admiring her tangled branches and gnarled roots. This new breed spoke of coordinates and logs. Beluga and Buster had arrived to give the old pine a new mission. Soon new guests will arrive and amuse Sabiniana. Some will leave happy or maybe sad or maybe they will come back again.
