Geocache Description:

This historic fort, erected circa 1690, is in the middle of a nice residential neighborhood. History in our own back yard, this two-story stone structure is the oldest standing fort in the state. Baltimore County recently repaired and rededicated the location. We don't know if it is open to the public currently but we saw craftsmen renovating the interior last year. Will update when known.

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, Fort Garrison is an approximately 48' x 18' fieldstone blockhouse constructed in the 1690's to serve as a frontier outpost. The fort was utilized by mounted rangers at the end of the seventeenth century and in 1755 during the French and Indian War. The second story was added a century later.

The historic sign in front states in part:
"...rangers to patrol paths from the Patapsco to the Susquehanna (rivers) as a protection against hostile Indians. It was nine miles from the nearest white inhabitants when built."

The cache is a small orange tube reasonably hidden from view. Bring your own writing utensil-the tiny pencil I brought along broke in 2! Please be very discrete when searching for this cache as it is in a residential neighborhood.
