Geocache Description:

This cache is accessible to almost everyone. It is well hidden in plain sight. You can drive within 20 feet of it, and, from the Art Loeb Trail parking lot, take a leisurely stroll of less than .1 mile one way. Parking coordinates are N35 16.918 W082 43.281

Directions: From the intersection of Hwy 64 and 276 in Pisgah Forest drive east on US 276 into Pisgah National Forest. Go a little under 2 miles and turn left off Hwy 276 at Davidson River Campground, and park in the parking lot on the left. Walk back to Davidson River Campground road and continue straight ahead on the small dirt road that runs parallel with Hwy 276. The cache is hidden very near the entrance to the Excersise trail.

In the 50’s, I was old enough to go fishing with my dad. He loved to trout fish in Pisgah and we would have to take this little road to get his daily fishing permit. There was a small building alongside the road where the rangers issued daily permits to all fishermen and hunters.

At the end of the day you had to come back to this check-in, check-out station to turn in your permit and show the rangers the fish caught or animals harvested. Early mornings and just before dark there would be quite a line of fishermen or hunters, many exchanging tales. Good memories.

Update: on June 30, 2007, we returned for cache maintenance, and found the area a disaster! The combination of storm damage and cleanup efforts seem to have destroyed this one, or it may be well covered under a pile of cleanup debris.
We moved the cache further down the same small road, closer to where the ranger station was actually located. With all of the rock, water and tree cover, the area is "GPS hostile." One time the coords would take us right to the cache, and a few minutes later, 70' away. After much frustration, we decided that this one needs a little help, so we are providing you with pictures to ensure your success.

From the sign pictured on the left, take about 7 or 8 STEPS on bearing 130° and you will run right into the small, multi-trunked tree pictured on the right. Try looking in the base. Good luck!
This small tree may be significant!

The cache container is still a small pill container, well hidden from casual view. It is approximately 30 feet from the center of the road, opposite the river. You may be in sight of anyone traveling the road, fishing, tubing the river, or hiking the trail on the opposite side of the river.

You may have to be secretive in your search for this cache to survive.

Please hide it back well so that others may enjoy the search.
