Sparks, Nv Population: 63,000 (est 1997) Elevation: 4400 Feet Cache Elevation: 4814 Feet. Current Price of Silver $5.56 per oz I will try to keep this current. Sparks was an afterthought of the railroad's created to the east of Reno in 1904 to replace Wadsworth as the big switching yard on this section of the southern Pacific Railroad. Like the history of many cities in northern Nevada, the history of the City of Sparks is closely related to the development of the railroad transportation. The City had been called East Reno, New Wadsworth and Harriman for a while, but that did not suit the independent spirit of the new citizenry, and in 1904 was officially named the City of Sparks. In 1905 Sparks became an incorporated city and Governor Sparks hosted a barbecue for the citizens of Sparks at his Alamo Stock Farm in celebration of the honor. Family oriented and hard-working, Sparks was so solid and dull that it sometimes became the butt of local jokes. Early example: "Reno is so close to Hell you can see Sparks." In the 1950s Sparks changed. Acre upon acre of brown composition roofs blossomed up out of the brown dirt as one subdivison after another appeared in the grazing lands on the northeast. This rapid growth continues even today and Sparks has become a wonderful family oriented residential community in which the railroad plays a much diminished role. We love Sparks and we enjoy living in this great City. We also enjoy collecting coins--Coins have a great history behind them---The State of Nevada with its silver and gold mines plays an important role in the history of US coins. This is a theme cache--located in an ammo box--Please try to keep all the items You trade silver in color or with a silver theme to them since Nevada is the Silver State.
