Geocache Description:

A wonderful stroll out to a nice overlook followed by a short but steep scramble to the local peak.

The start of this hike can be almost anywhere: Nuuanu, Judd, Tantalus, Kalawahine, Manoa Cliff, or even Manoa. The end of the hike is a top the peak at the back of the Manoa Valley.

Whereever, you start from you will eventually want to get on the Pauoa Flats Trail and follow it to its terminus. This is a wide, quiet trail hidden under a thick canopy and carpeted with roots. This upper trail is the backbone of the Honolulu Mauka trail system with several trail junctions branching away from its dark, forested length.

Today a new bench was placed at the terminus in memory of Daniel Levey and to encourage safe hiking in Hawaii.

From here you will see an unmaintained/poorly maintained trail to your right heading up to a local peak. About 250 foot down the trail there is a switch back trail leading to the left, DO NOT TAKE THIS ONE. This trail is the old Castle trail that has been unused and almost forgotten for many years. The HTMC is making a valiant effort to reopen the trail by 2010 and are in the process of clearing it out. Although it may look safe, IT IS NOT! Continue climbing up the ridge trail (crossing the switch back twice) until you get to the top of the first peak.

At the top of this peak is a nice clearing for eating lunch and enjoying a well deserved break.

We started up the Kalawahine Trail and then continued on the Pauoa Flats trail. After climbing the ridge trail to Peak 2218 we continued along the ridge trail to the switch back and returned along that way (Not Recommended, too dangerous). We then walked back along the Pauoa Flats to the Manoa Cliffs trail and then back to the road. Roundtrip of 5.5 miles with most of it being on very well maintained trails with minimal elevation gain. The 0.3 miles from the bench to the peak is not for the faint of heart or acrophobic hikers, we know - two of our hiking companions bailed!

Initial contents include a watch, knife, PEZ and other fun stuff. Hike Safely! Cache is not near an edge.
