Camp Columbia Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pofe: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

If you have any questions, please email me directly at Pofe@GeocachingAdmin.com . Please be sure to include the caches name and GC# or URL with your email.

NOTE: Do not reply to this email directly. The communication will not be received. To ensure a prompt response, please follow the method of contact described above.

Kind Regards,
Pofe

Geocache Description:

Visit a decaying bit of cartographic history.

Columbia University's Engineering school established this site in 1891 as a summer camp, and the property was recently purchased by the state of Connecticut. In its heyday this was a training ground for surveyors who spent their days mapping the local terrain. It is said that there are benchmarks in the area that were laid by the University specifically for training. The links below offer additional information:

Appropriately enough, there is now a geocache hidden amongst the ruins.

Begin your quest at the Camp Columbia gate near the junction of Routes 109 and 209 in Morris - N41 40.992 W73 13.759, as noted above. From there, follow the gated road south and east a bit over 1/2 mile to the main campus. Once there you must locate a stone marker dedicating one of the buildings to the class of 1906. But which building? Let's just say that when you arrive on site your geocaching curiosity will point the way. Please don't enter any of the buildings which are clearly marked No Trespassing.

When you locate the stone marker, note the date of construction. Then use this information to calculate the location of the final cache.

1. Take the last two digits of the date of construction.
2. Add 18.
3. Plug the result into N41 40.xx6 W73 13.195.

This cache was designed to be winter friendly - you should have no problems even in deep snow. I ask that you take special care to restore the cache exactly as found for the next visitor, and if you leave telltale tracks, please leave LOTS of them in various locations to make it a bit more of a challenge for the next hunters. I've included a modest FTF prize along with the usual collection of trinkets.

A word on night caching - I think this would be a fun, if spooky, night cache, but I'm not sure the game warden who lives next to the gate would agree. Night owls beware!

And a word on parking - the gated entrance way is not plowed, and you must not block the gate. I parked just uphill of the gate in the grass. Creativity in parking will be required if there is a lot of snow.
