Mt. Ararat Fire Tower (Formally Scott's Sourdough) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TTeebow: I have decided to archive this cache. The area really has nothing spectacular to offer for a view or uniqueness with the natural environment. I know the town is possibly looking to take control of the old fire tower and if it comes true maybe at that point there would be a chance to climb it for a view of Topsham and then use that as a calling card for placing another cache in the area.

Thanks,
Team Teebow

Geocache Description:

This is one of the highest spots in Topsham, so expect some uphill walking. There are trails used by the Mt. Ararat cross country team, and part of your trip will be off-trail. Depending on your approach you may even have a nice view.

There are several possible approaches to this cache. To begin the journey park at one of two spots near Mt. Ararat High School. The first starting point is at the gate at N43 56.338 W69 57.854'. From here you will have a relatively easy start up a dirt road. For a more direct approach park in the student lot (when school isn't in) and take the path directly opposite the entrance.

Ararat Fire Tower-located behind the Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, in Sagadahoc County, elevation of 205'. Erected in 1933 (50' steel tower) and still standing in fine shape in 1998. The tower is no longer used for fire observation. The windows are boarded over and communications dishes that were mounted on it have been removed and relocated on the new communications tower a few 100’ away.

The contents are in a round rubbermade container. We tried to pick items that would appeal to a wide range of geocachers. Hopefully you find something you like, but please make sure you substitute items of similar value for others. The original contents of the cache were: Wooden puzzle, Hotwheels submarine, Matchbox Hovercraft, crystal necklace, plastic frog, turtle earrings, Rocky Ridge Orchard wooden nickle, 2 homemade crayons, Doubletree Hotel pen, Maine Principal's Association pin, Camel Zippo lighter, homemade CD of "Eli the Magician", Get Out of Jail Free Card, calculator, 2 Portland Pirates Hockey ticket vouchers for 2003-2004, Mt. Ararat Varsity Gold Discount Card
