Geocache Description:

Bearpen Cove Cache #1 along the lower trail below Case Camp Ridge

Bearpen Cove is not labeled on the USGS Shiningrock quadrangle, but is an expansive old hunting ground lying between Case Camp Ridge north, Seniard Ridge south, Blueridge Parkway west and headwaters road east. This cache is positioned .1 miles by foot or bike on old motor roads from the loggers of years past.

Take US 276 north, 10.3 miles, turn left on FS road 475B Headwaters road, go 1.6 miles to the parking area and trailhead. Look for the National Forest management sign. Walk .1 miles up the trail. The cache is located off the trail to the left under a laurel root ball.

Cache is in a wooden box with log book and exchangeable items including our personal geostar and a personalized "first finder" geomarker. We also left a newly activated TB inside.

As folklore has it, Case camp was an early 19th century logging camp operated by Hezakiah and Elzie Case, complete with rooming accomodations, bath house, barber shop and laundry. A local still supplied the camp saloon and female
companionship was provided by Elzie who brought ladies up from nearby Brevard in her covered wagon. It was rumored that Dr. Schenk had a terrible time keeping his forestry students out of Case Camp. At times he was rumored to be seen in his wagon in the wee hours of the morning collecting those young lads from along the sides of the trail leading from the camp.

Once you find the cache, venture on if you like another .2 mi to Log Hollow Falls. It is labeled on the map as Log Hollow Branch and is the first falls on the trail. If you continue another .3 mi you will come to a second falls. This is unnamed on the map and is the area in which you will find bearpen cove cache #2.
