Placed by WebbyCat, adopted by KoonsKachers 10/16/2010...

Located in the old Girard Cemetery

As a focal point in the cemetery, there is a large monument that was erected in 1892 by General Bailey which was dedicated to the unknown dead who fell in the Civil War. I've always wanted to do some research to find out more about General Bailey, but never have gotten around to doing it.

Every year on Memorial Day, the American Legion conducts a wonderful and moving ceremony by the monument.

From WebbyCat's original cache description, "There is a lot of personal history in this cemetery for me. My great great grandmother is buried here.

She was traveling by horse and buggy to her daughter's (my great grandmother) hastily arrainged shotgun wedding when she was delayed enroute for several hours by a severe January storm. She took a chill that night and died two days later from pneumonia at age 35. Most members of the family never forgave my great grandmother over the entire indicent and always said she was the cause of her mother's death."
