Geocache Description:

Blackdown, Dorchester, Dorset

Hardy’s Monument stands on the highest point of Blackdown. It was erected in 1844 in memory of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, friend of Nelson and captain of HMS Victory at Trafalgar, who lived in the nearby village of Portesham. There are wonderful views over the Dorset coast to Lyme Bay, the Isle of Portland and Weymouth.

Most visitors park by the monument but there is an alternative pull-in at the start of your walk, N50 41.285, W002 32.725. From here, take the track bearing 300 degrees. Where a path forks left after 130m, keep right on the main track. At track junction N50 41.543 W002 32.886, curve N and W. You may lose GPS signal, especially in summer, so use the hint as necessary. Near the cache the track can get very muddy especially when forestry work is going on.

You can enjoy a pleasant 2.5 km circular walk by continuing along this track after finding the cache. At N50 41.384 W002 33.377 you join another track. Turn E and follow it back to the start.

This cache could be combined with ‘Kismet Hardy’ by Achaos on the S side of Blackdown, 'West Dorset Rainbow Series - Blue' by Team Senry or 'Bronkham Hill' by bagwell farmers to the SE.
