The French explored the Bay of St. Louis in 1699, with the Compte DeLisle exploring the various inlets in hopes of finding the mouth of the Mississippi River. The Bay is depicted on the French Carte de la Louisiane, dated 1732. Today, ‘St. Louis Bay’ is much calmer than in it’s past glory days. Many are aware of the small naval battle in the Bay between the Americans and the British during the War of 1812.

Few know that the Bay was once a haven for “Bootleggers” during the age of Prohibition, with local legend alluding to a home on the Jourdan River for men from Al Capone’s gangland organization. In 1928 an asphalt covered wooden bridge was built across the Bay linking Highway 90. In the summer months, thrown cigarettes often ignited the structure, which earned it the nickname of the “Bridge of Fire.” A new bridge was built in 1950 connecting Henderson Point and the city of Bay St. Louis.
