Young Ironsides Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

JT & PJ Cole: The new traffic pattern in this area returns the area to marshland which makes getting to this cache impossible due to the tides. All good things must come to an end.

Geocache Description:

Please be aware that there is road construction going on nearby for the next few months. They are working Mon-Fri. so weekends might be best.
This cache is located on the west side of the island which is called Gasconigne Bluff, in an area that most folks just pass by on their way to the beach without even noticing. The terrain rating is what it is because there are no trails to follow.

In 1736 Capitan Gasconigne, of the British Sloop of war Hawk established here at Gasconigne Bluff the base for the naval defense of the colony of Georgia. The Spaniards landed here in the invasion of 1742. In 1794 live Oak timbers were cut on St. Simons, loaded from this bluff and sent to Boston to be used in the construction of the Frigate Constitution, better known as Old Ironsides.

This cache is the traditional ammo box, modified to better fit into the environment on St. Simons Island. It is filled with many different items for trade including small hand tools, a brass lock and keys, maps and a logbook and camera. You will also find 3 CITO bags. Take one with you on your way out.
