If you enjoyed Scab Island, this is the friendly and easier version. To get to Mission 3, you climb and scramble up one of my favorite near unspoilt canyons. Like Scab Island, it ain't easy, but real worthwhile. The cache, a mason jar, is located in the crook of the gnarled trees across from the rock with the statuette of the Virgin Mary. Always follow the creekbed. I discovered this place a couple years ago. When the water is up, there is a pool beneath the rocks. In Springtime, it's filled with wriggling red lizards. Mission 3 is a meditative little grotto before the creek canyon flattens out into a forest. When I found it, you could still see where someone had written "Mission 3" on a rock. All that remains of their personal church is a statuette of the Virgin Mary upon a rock and a cross of Jesus nailed up in a tree. Couldn't have picked a nicer spot. I added some Buddhist bells up in some branches a bit of a ways aways, so you're not hearing things. There's actually a swimming hole on your way up here. keep your eyes open. Last year it had some huge koi swimming in it.
UPDATE 12/03/06 - Cache has been replaced and is now a plastic jar wrapped in camo tape hidden just behind the crook of the gnarled tree.
