Almost Edward's Point is about 2 miles from the Rainbow
Wilderness trailhead and 3 miles from Signal Point on the
Cumberland Trail. You may be thinking that's a long way to hike for
a minicache, but the view is phenomenal; way better than Signal
Point! There's a completely unobstructed view of the Tennessee
River, Williams Island, and downtown Chattanooga, framed by Signal
and Raccoon Mountains.
The real Edward's Point is up the trail about 50 yards. The area
around the cache is pretty much pristine, but the real Edward's
Point is in serious need of some Cache In Trash Out, so bring your
Wal-Mart sacks!
You can see a trail map here. The hike
is not that bad, but there are a few ups and downs that will leave
you out of breath, and it's long. From Signal Point, it will take
you around the top of the plateau at Middle Creek, then across
Middle Creek on a suspension bridge. The area around the bridge is
also very close to
Tribute to Cumberland Trail and
Rainbow Falls/Velcro Pygmies Tribute Cache. When you get close
to the cache, there is no reason to get off the trail or the
rock that forms the point. Let's not trample the local
flora!
Since this is a point, that means that there are bluffs
close to the cache. Please keep your kids and yourself away from
the edge. If your GPS tells you to go off the edge, it's lying to
you.
Also, please leave the cache exactly as you found it so that
others can enjoy it.
There are at least three ways to get there:
- Park at Signal Point: N35 07.212 W085 21.994 The trail starts
to the right of the overlook when facing the river.
- Park at Rainbow Lake Wilderness: N35 07.486 W085 21.708
Currently, this is doesn't look like a wilderness area because
they've torn down all the trees for parking, but really, there's a
trail there. I'm pretty sure this is the closest route.
- Park at Shackleford Ridge Park: N35 06.440 W085 18.065. The
trail starts just to the right of the pavilion in front of the
soccer fields. You can also pick up
What's Up in Shackleford Ridge and
The Mushroom on your way. From the pavilion, just head toward
The Mushroom (there are a blue million ways to get there), and take
the white-blazed Cumberland Trail along the edge of the plateau
from there. This route is about 8 miles round-trip.
- There is a 4x4 trail very close to the cache, and AB4N reports
that it starts at 35N 08.939 85W 22.143
