Geocache Description:

A circular walk by the river and through the forest at Kielder, incorporating a spectacular viewpoint.

One of several car parks now closed but still accessible on foot.

There is a picnic area at the parking spot at Lewisburn in this secluded valley - head west across the picnic area to find the path. At the beginning there are several ponds dug many years ago and now supporting a rich variety of plants and insects. Please take care as the ponds are deep - keep a close eye on the kids!

The walk will take you by the burns, over a bridge and up the path to a viewpoint where you can enjoy the panoramic views down the burns and the valley, and over the forest.

To complete the circular walk from here continue on down the path and after a short walk, over another bridge and into the forest. A narrow path passing through a grove of old Scots Pine leads to a narrow footbridge spanning the burn and back to the carpark.

Features of the trail - Scots Pine are native to this country, their widely spaced branches letting in plenty of light to the plants growing underneath. Look out for several types of nest boxes including those for owls and goosanders. Alder trees are well adapted to riverbank life, they help to stabilise the banks, and prevent erosion.

Part of the route was a toll road built by Sir John Swinburne in 1830 principally to transport coal mined in the North Tyne to homes in the Scottish Borders - the Toll Pillar erected on the route still stands today. The packhorse bridge was built 200 years ago to enable coal to be carried by packhorse on the road.

The cache is hidden off the path before the viewpoint and opposite the huge single pine.
