Enigma: Mission 1 - The Monk's Cache Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Boneychest & Catsuey: The Enigma series has had a good run but we've decided that now is the time to archive these caches.

Thank you to the 198 cachers/teams that have logged a find on one or more of the series and congratulations to the 26 of you who completed the final mission - we hope you enjoyed the challenge even if it did addle your brain (and hopefully nobody got divorced over it).

The final mission will be left open for a while to allow those who are still pondering the puzzle time to crack the code and claim their prize.

Anyone who needs this part of the enigma toolkit to complete the final mission can print the attached images.

Geocache Description:

Enigma. Noun, from the Latin word aenigma, meaning puzzle. Used for something that has an unknown meaning or purpose.

This is the first in a series of six caches. Each of the first five contains either coded information or tools that you will need in order to locate the final cache. You need to find all of the first five caches before you can crack the sixth and final part.

There is limited parking approximately 200 metres East of the given coordinates, which mark the start of the trail. Much of the area is covered with a dense canopy making the GPS signal weak but there are open areas from where it is possible to get a fix.

Monks wood is part of an ancient forest managed by English Nature as a National Nature Reserve and is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Many of the flowers and insects are protected species so please obey the rules listed at the entrance; in particular, don’t pick any flowers and do be sure to keep to the footpaths. It is vitally important that we do not cause any damage or disturbance to the wildlife, whether intentional or accidental. Click Here to find out more about English Nature and Here for an online leaflet.

The wood was known as Ewingswode when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. From the mid 12th century until 1536 it belonged to the abbey at Sawtry and it was during that time that it became known as Monks Wood. Sir Oliver Cromwell became ward of the wood when he received it, along with other monastic properties, after the dissolution.

The information board at the start coordinates gives the telephone number for the site manager as 01780 ABCADE. On the rear of the sign a notice tells you that the reserve has been notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest under section CH of the relevant act.

You will find a stream that flows from a tunnel at

N 52° 24.CB(D-B)     W 000° 13.DDA.

A microcache containing your next coordinates lies beside the path 16 metres downstream of the opening. (clue 1)

When you reach the coordinates given in the micro, head downhill until you reach a junction with an entrance to a secure area. The security system on the entrance has some numbers; the number describing the type of device = F, the last digit of the serial number = G

A =         B =       C =       D =        E =         F =       G =       H =

The final cache, which is a regular ammo box, is located at

N52° 24.CHE      W000° 1F.DGB

The wood is occasionally closed for forest management activities (including shooting). At these times all entrances are blocked and clear notices displayed. Do not attempt to enter at these times!
