Angeles Crest Highway encompasses 64 miles or so of highway
though the middle of the San Gabriel Mountains from La
Canada-Flintridge to Wrightwood. This highway, which took a total
of 27 years to complete, is an engineering marvel. What’s
amazing is that along the entire highway, engineers only needed to
construct two short tunnels and they are right next to each other.
This micro cache is located near the entrance of the west
tunnel, near mile marker 62.80. (Baring heavy snowfall, this
portion of the highway is open year round. Check with CalTrans for road condition information before
you set out. Enter SR2 for Angeles Crest Highway.)
There’s ample parking along the south side of the
highway.
The cache container is a yellow M&M’s tube, about
6-inches long and one-inch in diameter. It is hidden in a crack on
the rock wall above and behind the tunnel entrance. You will
need to make a short and slightly steep climb over loose rock and
gravel to reach it. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
GPS accuracy right up against the rock wall was poor. So, unless
you feel particularly adventurous, I recommend decoding the clues
and printing out the spoiler photos to take with you. You
don’t have to read the clue or look at the pictures before
you set out on the hunt (unless you want to), but you may be glad
to have them with you just in case! I want you to have fun, but
also want you to find the darn thing!
Difficulty rating is based on using clues and pictures. Without
these, rate it a 3.
Since the cache container is a small and narrow, there's only
room for tiny trade items. Once you've made a trade or just signed
the log, please be sure that the lid is on tight and that you
replace the container exactly as you found it, including the
items used to keep it out of sight. Also, watch out for muggles
parked or driving along the highway. You'll be in plain sight as
you find the cache, so act nonchalant! (I pretended to be taking
photos whenever a car or motorcycle was in sight.)
Have fun!
