STOCKDALE MILL The Stockdale Mill, Dam & Race, located near Roann, Indiana on the Eel River, was built in 1857 and was operated continuously until 1964. The mill manufactured and shipped flour to the Union armies during the War Between the States. Out of the over 2000 water powered grist mills that once existed on Indiana's Rivers and streams, this is one of the few that was never converted to steam or electric power. There were once thirteen Mills on the Eel River. The mill is fully operational, with all its original equipment, except the Water Wheel which was replaced with Turbines in 1910.The Mill structure consists of four floors and a sub-basement, with 50' and 40' native lumber single-tree support timbers on each floor. The Mill produced about 75 horsepower and made 50 barrels of flour a day in addition to corn meal and animal feed.

I'll bet that there aren't many people out there who have seen the mill in operation.
I do, I do! My grandfather purchased Case tractors from Watson and Bidwell in Roann. I guess that he had to make a trip to the dealership for parts one day, so he asked me to go along. He filled a bag with wheat, and said that he was going to show me how they make the flour that grandma uses to make bread. I can still remember that day. I guess that I just couldn't believe what I saw. It seems like yesterday but it was a long long time ago.
UPDATE, JUNE 2005:Trickworm has rehidden this one for us, since we can't seem to make our GPSr work here. Our coordinates were way off, his are right on. His log says that his cache is not Rivertrek Number 5, but now it is. We rehid ours, which keeps dissapearing, in the hollow base of Walnut #2 (If you have access to Trickworm's 16 Tree Map). That's about 115 feet west of his. I'm sure his will stay put, if you people re-hide it properly. Ours will probably disappear again quickly--However if you can find both until then, log them both... UPDATE JUNE 18,2005 --Trickworm reports that his cache has dissapeared, but ours is still there (This place really eats cacnes!!)--So you will have to start your search from his stump coordinates, then march west to our Walnut.
