Got Trout? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Sgt Stitches: As much as I hate to do it... I think I am going to archive this cache for now. I just have not had the time to replace the cache in this great location. If I have time next year, I'll place a new cache... but for now I'll arc hive this one in case anyone else wants to place one in this area.

Geocache Description:

The first five star terrain Cruz Commandos Cache.
Cache is only open March 1 to September 15. See Loch Lomond web site for more details.

PLEASE rehide the cache as good or better than you found it. The area can be really busy at times with lots of kids and other curious eyes. You may need to "dig " a little to make sure it stays hidden.

Update 9/7/2004: As you can read in several of the logs, this one may not be a 5-star terrain all the time. If you go late in the season, depending on rainfall, water usage in Santa Cruz, etc... this one may be accessible without a boat. That said, I will leave this one as a 5-star, since most of the season you will need a boat. Of course... the 5-star way is much more fun!

Hours of Operation:
Loch Lomond Recreation Area is open from March 1 through September 15.
March: 6 AM - 6:00 PM
April: 6 AM - 7:30 PM
May: 6 AM - 8:00 PM
June: 6 AM - 8:30 PM
July: 6 AM - 8:30 PM
August: 6 AM - 8:00 PM
September: 6 AM - 8:00 PM

Cache has a fishing theme, so please try to trade items having to do with fishing.... the cache is starting with several flies, a lure, a bobber, a nipper, and other items for the fisher-person.

As the map indicates, the cache is located in the middle of Loch Lomond Reservoir. There is a small cost to enter the park (fees were $4 entrance and $2 to launch a boat in 2004). You will require a boat to reach the cache (thus the 5 star terrain rating). Bring your own boat (see regulations below or at the web site) or ... you can rent a paddle boat or a rowboat right at the lake. So if you've always wanted to do a 5-star terrain, but didn't have the equipment, this is your chance!

Swimming is not allowed in the reservoir... after all, I have to drink this water and I know where some of you have been!

Bring a picnic and your fishing pole. The lake is stocked with trout and has a thriving bass and bluegill population. There are also lots of trails of varying difficulty around the lake. This location is out of the way so you may as well stay a while and enjoy the opportunity to relax and enjoy the Santa Cruz mountains.

Boating Rules
  • All boats must be at least six feet long and have proper flotation characteristics.
  • Gasoline engines are not permitted.
  • Sailboats and windsurfers are not permitted.
  • Rafts must be rubberized and utilize at least three inflatable chambers.
  • Canoes and kayaks are permitted.
  • Boats must contain one wearable personal flotation device per passenger.
  • Boaters under 12 years old must wear life jackets.
  • Boaters under 16 years old must have an adult on board at all times.
Cache container is a circular 750ml tupperware container with lockdown lid, so while the size is "regular", it's not as big as an ammo box, but it is bigger than a micro.

Cache contains a Geocaching.com keychain/compass as FTF prize. In addition to the fishing theme items, the cache contains a Sgt Stitches sig item army man and a camouflage army surplus sewing kit sig item. Cache also contains a yellow jeep travel bug and a California Geocoin.
